Australian Speleological Federation: Help: FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of answers to frequently asked questions regarding the data in the KID and how to interpret it. It does not cover how to use the database. Read the help files for that. If you have any additions that you would like to make to this page please contact Michael Lake at mikel@speleonics.com.au.

What is the UISIC and how does it relate to this Database?

The International Union of Speleology's Informatics Commission (UISIC) has proposed draft database field definitions to facilitate local and international exchange of data related to caves and karst. An example of how these fields can fit together in a cave database has also been given. Details can be found in the UISIC's
Proposal for Cave and Karst Data Exchange Standards document. The ASF's Karst Index Database is the first Web-based database to implement these proposed standards.

The KID reports that the cave has 0 entrances - how can this be?

The database contains a field "quantity_of_entrances" which is the total number of entrances to the cave, whether they are numbered or not. It is completed only for the main record for the cave and if there is more than one entrance.

When the raw data was imported from the DOS based Paradox system to this MySQL database numeric fields which were originally empty were converted into the numeric value 0.0 by the database (in databases a numeric field MUST have a numeric value, it can't be empty). Numeric fields which did have a value such as "3" show up correctly as 3. To fix the problem the "" entries have to be replaced by the special database keyword `NULL'.

A similar problem was found for fields of type float such as the cave length and temperature. These have now been fixed and a fix for the quantity_of_entrances field will also be done soon.

Example: a search for Mammoth Cave at Jenolan, NSW shows;

2J-13 Mammoth Cave at Jenolan, Entrance is cave type; (3 entrances);
2J-14 Mammoth Cave at Jenolan, Entrance is pothole type; (0 entrances);
2J-15 Mammoth Cave at Jenolan, Entrance is pothole type; (0 entrances);

The main entrance shows correctly 3 entrances. The other entrances to Mammoth Cave have zero as the value of the "quantity_of_entrances" field.
